Results of our recent Health Occupations Students of America State Competition and Delta College Criminal Justice Competition.
On April 24th and April 25th we took students to Traverse City to the State HOSA competition. Julie Moore took 5th in the Extemporaneous Writing event.
On April 25th, HS/EMS students traveled to the Delta College Criminal Justice Competition bringing home first place. Earning first place in the men's agility testing was Austin Anthony. Anthony also earned first place in the Quick Think Criminal Justice Event. In the Survey Says category McKenzie McCord from Tawas Area High School earned a 5th place finish.

Professional Students of the Month
The Iosco RESA Career and Technical Education Center would like to take this opportunity to recognize Tiffany Tyson as Professional Student of the Month for March, 2014. Tiffany is the daughter of James and Kaulana Tyson and is a senior at Tawas Area High School.
Tiffany is a second year student in the Iosco RESA Tech Center enrolled in the Food/Tourism & Hospitality Management Program. She is a very hard working student who is not afraid to take charge. She is always first to jump in and help others in need. She manages her time well and makes sure that all of her job duties are finished on time. Tiffany also volunteers for extra duties and has exemplary customer service skills. She is an outstanding role model and leader in our program and a pleasure to be around. In addition to school, Tiffany is also currently working as a Dietary Aide at Lakeview Manor.
To be nominated for “Professional Student of the Month”, a student must have outstanding work ethics, must not be absent or tardy during the month, no discipline issues and at least a B grade point average. Iosco RESA Tech Center offers the following programs for 11th and 12th grade students: Aircraft Maintenance, Automotive Technology, Food/Tourism & Hospitality Management, Health Science/EMS, Health Science/Nursing, and Power Mechanics. The Iosco RESA Career and Technical Education Center would like to take this opportunity to recognize James Turland as Professional Student of the Month for February, 2014. James is the son of Kerri Burg and Glen Turland. He is a senior at Tawas Area High School.
James is a second-year student in Iosco RESA’s Automotive Technology program. He currently goes to Dean Barbour Chevrolet for work site where he receives above average scores. He is involved in all shop activities and mentors first year students when needed. James is a leader and respected person and is definitely an asset to the program and the Tech Center. Last year James competed at the Michigan Industrial Technology Education Society’s high school automotive competition where he placed in the top ten for Shop Math, Written Test, Tool Identification and took 1st place in Safety Inspection. James will be competing again in May to try to earn more scholarship money on top of the scholarships he won at last year’s competition.

Regional HOSA Competition - 2014
Tawas Students Place High
Congratulations to the following Tawas Area High School students for their efforts in the 2014 Regional HOSA competition Health Occupations:
Jaime Nunn placed first in Prepared Speaking, Julie Moore placed first in Extemporaneous Writing, the Team of McKenzie Bischoff, Kara Collins and Hannah Koroly placed second in Public Service Announcement, and Austin Anthony placed third in Medical Spelling.
Placing in the Top 10 were Tiffany Miller in CPR/First Aid, Jordan Stack in Health Career Display, and Courtney Finley in Extemporaneous Health Poster.

MSBOA State Solo and Ensemble Festival
This past Saturday, we had students travel to Lapeer East High School to perform in the MSBOA State Solo and Ensemble Festival. While there, they performed very well and proudly represented our band program:
Gregory Jacot, Brenden Dehner, Kirstin Muscott, Mason Loucks, and Ashley Goodyear on earning a Superior Rating (I) for their Quintet.
Brenden Dehner and Kayla Vincenty-Cole on earning an Excellent (II) for their Duet.
David Ramsdell and Kayla Vincenty-Cole on earning a Superior (I) for their Duet.
Mason Loucks for earning a 73/100 (II) for his Proficiency I Solo (in which he had to perform not only his solo but scales from memory AND sight-read).
Brenden Dehner for earning an excellent (II) on his Alto Saxophone Solo.
Gregory Jacot for earning a Good (III) for his Clarinet Solo.

Science Olympic Team - 2014
TAWAS SCIENCE OLYMPIC TEAM PLACES 3RD!
Please join us in saying a huge CONGRATULATIONS to our Tawas Science Olympics Team. The students traveled Saturday 03/08/2014 to Alpena to compete in Regionals, coming home with an awesome 3rd place WIN. A goal, last time achieved in 1989, so thank you students and staff for all of your hard work and dedication!

Michigan All State Band
Doug Ferguson on his acceptance into the Michigan All State Band. Doug will be representing Tawas Area Schools as one of the All State Junior Band's 8th Grade Percussionists. To be accepted into this band, students from all over the state recorded an official audition consisting of a prepared etude, memorized scales, and a sight reading piece.
Doug will be traveling to Grand Rapids, MI on January 18th to perform with the All State Band at this year's annual Michigan Music Conference.
All-State Academic Team - 2013 Varsity Volleyball
Congratulations to the Tawas Area High School Varsity Volleyball Team for being named an All-State Academic Team for the 2013 season. Congratulations as well to Rebekah Palmer, Lauren Hedglin and Maggie McDonald for being named Academic All State as well. Way to work hard both on and off the court as you proudly represented our Tawas Area High School's strong academic tradition!! We are very proud of you!
